Hands-on Science with CRC 1261 – Rent-a-Scientist in Action

What do magnets have to do with medicine? Why can the heart be measured not only electrically but also magnetically? And what do engineers actually do?

As part of the Rent-a-Scientist initiative by KielRegion, three CRC members (doctoral researchers Lucie Bangert and Paul Diemel, and our spokesperson Gerhard Schmidt) visited two secondary schools this summer and gave 8th and 9th graders a hands-on look at biomagnetic sensing and interdisciplinary research.

The aim: to spark interest in engineering careers, share insights into our current research, and demonstrate how diverse and exciting science can be – from piezoelectric effects and magnetocardiography to magnetic sensors in medical applications.

Many thanks to the dedicated teachers, curious students, and the Rent-a-Scientist team!

The format is part of the Science Summer 2025 and supported by the European Union through Horizon Europe.
